Bunker's smooth writing helped me to settle into this comfortable and easy read, despite the fact that it's a dark fantasy with paranormal elements. The Gothic horror tone was consistent and enjoyable, reminding me of favorites such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Frankenstein. The author made her own contribution to the genre with a creative spin on the paranormal. I noticed some typos here and there, but that didn't keep me from wanting to continue. I'd love to find out more about Fabian and his perspective on all that has transpired. The title of the second book in the series is worrisome, but all the more reason to find out what happens.Tags : Witch In The Woods (Volume 1) [Taylor Ann Bunker] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I was pleasantly pleased and surprised by Witch In The Woods. I love the title simple yet elegant. Taylor Ann Bunker has an imagination out of this world and does her homework as well in this romping witch hunt set in colonial times. Victor Steep is the courageous witch hunter and hero who, against all odds, does battle against the, more than match, lethal witch. A good amount of chapters start with Steep reading from his journal which is a wonderful touch.
Bunker is masterful in the way she seamlessly weaves colorful descriptions and vivid details into the narrative, action, and dialog of the story. At times I felt like I was watching a movie. And if your heart wasn’t beating fast enough with fear in the dark woods of Beth’s Hollow, then it’ll beat for that YA young love when Steep runs into Clearly Willow. Bunker has a gift when it come to creating characters. I especially like the contrast between the characters the true mark of a talented author. This is most evident in the dialog between Gammer and Steep.
I read WITW in a day. This one has it all. The Misercorde Dagger is cool, but I gotta get me one of those dagger pistols and start a collection.
Witch in the Woods is a paranormal story about a witch hunter, Victor Steep, who is carrying on his family tradition of hunting down witches who pose danger to villages in the English countryside. The book is the first in a series and it takes place in the village of Beth's Hollow and its surrounding forest. It is an interesting look at the dangers of witch hunting in the quaint days of early England and the people, both good and bad, that Victor meets along the way.
I did have a problem at first determining in what time period and country the book took place. I had to make an educated guess based on context clues. Once I got past that confusion I found an enjoyable book with just the right touch of supernatural scares. Though it does have some scarier, intense moments I think it would be suitable for the age group of 13+. There is a sweet subplot about Victor and a young girl named Clearly who he tries to help. The book is rather short, I read it in about two and a half hours, but it was worth the time.
I gave it three stars because as I mentioned there was some confusion for me about the setting that could have easily been cleared up with just a few short sentences. There were also several typos and grammatical errors that could have been cleared up with just one more pass by an editor. The journal entries that started some of the chapters also became rather repetitive, they served little purpose other than catching the reader up on the events that happened in the previous chapter. That is what led me to give it a three star rating instead of the four star that the storytelling alone would have deserved.
Overall, the story was enjoyable, the characters were fleshed out in a believable way and the story ended in a satisfying manner even though it was left open for sequels. I look forward to reading more by this author, she has a definite talent for storytelling and world building.
Dreadfully cliche, long winded, and riddled with obvious spelling errors. Not to mention no one has a personality. I've read better fanfiction.
Poorly written and amateurish, do not recommend.
It was quite an enjoyable read that kept me turning pages to see what happened next. Very much looking forward to the next book in the series!
Odd writing. Poor descriptions. Could have been better.
This book was everything I wanted it to be. You feel the emotions of the characters and get excited about what's going to happen next.
A Great fall read and I'm equally excited to read the rest of the trilogy!
