These are tightly written, have terrific world building , and a reasonable amount of politics. The main & periphery characters are fleshed out enough that they all have little tics about them to tell them apart--the bodyguards aren't faceless soldiers that die without thought, and the main characters are folks you might ask to dinner. The author sneaked in some commentary on society in general w some wise observations. There are also at most times not good guys and bad guys, simply characters doing what needs to be done for their own reasons.
A piece of advice, the stories are not in chronological order throughout the 3 sets of omnibuses that hold 3books each. However, I believe they are the first nine books in the collection. Doing it again, I would go find the chronological order and read them that way. My husband doesn't get in a work about that stuff and I followed his advise that 'any order is fine,' some point around 3am and was feeling lazy. I will ignore his opinions on reading series in order from now on no matter how late or tiring it is.

As stated many times before these are not in chronological order and for those of you lucky enough to just be starting to read them now, it is well worth the time to read some of the other reviews and get the correct order.

I would have been OK and probably preferred that this series had continued on the dark course that it began. The guy is an assassin and has anger issues. I had no problem reading about a "not nice person". He had redeeming features. The story lines were smart. The writing witty. It was all good.

Then Brust introduced Cawti, the protagonist's future wife. And we get all this angst about finding his humanity.

I can read angst. Heck, I did. And despite my complaining these are all Good books. Some even Great.

Which doesn't negate that I wish they had gone in a different direction.
This omnibus edition comprises the first three books of the Vlad Taltos novels (in publication order). All three books are well written, and the world Steven creates is an excellent rennaisance era fantasy with a slight sci-fi underpinning.

The books are well written, with a light touch, and very fast paced. The slowest is the third one, Teckla, which describes the beginnings of an uprising among the undercalsses in Adrilankha (the city where Vlad lives). I found that some of that got a little tedious but still not enough to affect the overall rating.
Excellent series, especially if you're a fan of first-person narration styles like The Dresden Files.

Be prepared for some thinking though, as the name pronunciation guide included is necessary in some cases, and the books in this series are NOT written in chronological order. If you want to read the books in order instead of publication order, there are online guides for that.

The world-building here is good, plots are complex (though the individual books in this volume are not terribly long). I enjoy the characters. Just be willing to accept that some things are not going to be explained. I've read every single book in the series and I'm still not entirely sure what some of the Dragaeran animals are supposed to look like despite their plot importance. Also, never read on an empty stomach because the author loves writing about food.
The wizard/sorcerer hero and narrator of this story is a guy named Vlad. He’s the fantasy equivalent of a small-time Godfather. He engages in stereotypical Godfather behavior being a witty and engaging conversationalist at parties, cleverly circumventing plots on his own life, and daringly assassinating others, all while living the high life at the cost of the misery of thousands among them, for example, hundreds of young women, bought or kidnapped and forced to work in his brothels. One of his good friends, a certain Lord Morrolan, who lives in a floating castle in which is conducted a never-ending and luxurious party, is a despotic (yet oh so elegant and debonair) overlord who openly admits that he had one of his villages slaughtered wholesale because it was convenient for increasing his magical power. When a young woman in Vlad’s own territory is overheard mentioning (true) rumors that the governing council may be having financial problems, though Vlad’s never heard of her before, he gives orders to have her killed. Not warned, not taken somewhere until the trouble blows over, but killed. His orders are carried out that evening. I could go on with examples, but there’s no need. The bottom line is that, the “hero” of this story is not a good person with flaws, but an outright scum-of-the-earth.
So, I found it difficult to like him. If I’d read only the first two stories in this three-story pack I would have given a rating of one star and never read further. But, in the third book Vlad is forced by circumstances to consider the possibility that he’s a nasty piece of work and that life changes might be in order. He doesn't fully become a good enough person that it’s comfortable rooting for him, but it’s a change in an encouraging direction. Aside from my complaints above, the writing and plotting of these stories is high quality, good enough that I’m still considering reading some additional books in the series. If they continue the arc hinted at by the third volume in this collection, I’ll probably be giving higher ratings.
This book starts Steven Brust's Jhereg fantasy series ( of which I have 9, plus several off-shoots that follow different characters). These stories recount the life of Vlad Taltos, a human living in a world dominated by sorcery using elves. The world depicted is very different from typical fantasies, and Vlad has to deal with discrimination because of both being human and being a member of the Jhereg (an elvish type of mafia). I enjoyed Jhereg and Yendi a good deal, but sometimes found Teckla dragging a bit (it involves his human wife and a group of social revolutionaries). Some might think the tales a bit wordy, but I liked the way the author seemed to enjoy the telling.
