This is 5th in the series and I've enjoyed every one of them. Each installment is really a separate book with its own characters. In this book we follow a ghost. She hangs around with a guy ghost and she keeps watch over her living daughter. The guy ghost happens to be the father who never knew he had a daughter when he was alive. The problem is a demi demon who takes over personalities, does terrible things, then arranges for the one she inhabits to be prosecuted while she goes off to the next inhabitation. The fates want her to help an angel catch the demi-demon - again. She's managed to get free. In the process, her own daughter is endangered. The ghost is being considered to be an angel - but she is more devilish in a practical way. This is told from the point of view of the ghost and she is quite the rascally ghost. I enjoyed the story and the main characters.Tags : Waking the Witch [Kelley Armstrong] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. One of the most popular writers of paranormal fiction and the #1 New York Times bestselling author returns with a rollicking new novel in her Otherworld series. At twenty-one,Kelley Armstrong,Waking the Witch,Dutton,0525951784,Fantasy - Contemporary,Murder;Investigation;Fiction.,Occult fiction.,Witches;Fiction.,ENGLISH CANADIAN NOVEL AND SHORT STORY,Fantasy,Fantasy - Paranormal,Fiction,Fiction - Fantasy,Fiction Fantasy Contemporary,Fiction-Fantasy,GENERAL,General Adult,Investigation,Murder,Occult fiction,SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,United States,Witches
Waking the Witch Kelley Armstrong 9780525951780 Books Reviews
OK, I'm not an author, and probably couldn't write a creative story. But after reading every book written by Kelley Armstrong I can say that this does not compare favorably. I will do my best not to spoil the story for you in this review, but I might a bit, so don't read on if this concerns you.
The story is disjointed and not cohesive (possibly due to poor editing). In some places I had to reread the page two or three times to try and understand what was going on. The "surprise bad guy" was a cheap shot in my opinion due to the lack of foreshadowing (there was a tiny bit but not even enough to let you solve the mystery) about their identity. And even when it was revealed it was just unlikely and random (I know, unlikely in a fantasy LOL!). I also don't like that the Benandanti angle was unexplored but I'm sure the next book will reveal all-- which brings me to my last peeve, a CLIFFHANGER. The book is something like $20+ dollars and you don't get a full story or even a very satisfactory love story (a paranormal romance without the romance?). I feel cheated.
Lastly, Savannah. I'm sorry, but I thought Paige was more likeable. What is so horrible about having an extra special genetic boost, being rich, standing six feet tall, riding a vintage motorcycle, and looking like a model? Her mom did die when she was young, but she was cared for my a smart guardian who marries a lawyer and sends her off on adventures (and she skips college). The other heroines in this series are much better.
What I did like about the story was the setting, it was different from the other books. I liked the big city detective because he seemed more real. And I liked the story about Kayla and Paula (minus cliffhanger).
You probably will want to read this book if you like the Otherworld series, but as a stand alone example of Mrs. Armstrong's work it does nothing for me. I really love all the other books in her series though (except for the one with Eve as the sole narrator, Haunted) so don't think I won't preorder the next book.
How did I ever get behind in this series? Kelley's BITTEN was my first Paranormal read and I have loved her books. WAKING THE WITCH is just as good as the previous books in the TOTOW series.
Savannah is alone while Paige and Lucas are on vacation and Adam is at a conference. Being 21 now she is all about proving herself and becoming a full acting PI with the firm. So, when Lucas' old friend Jessie shows up asking for assistance on a murder case she jumps at it. She will do field work while he's involved with another case and then he'll join her.
There were two girls murdered earlier at the same location. It's thought that the little dying town may have a serial murdered. So Savannah begins at the murder site. What she finds is the daughter of one of the first murdered girls there. She's nine and doing her own "detective" work since no one has found or even seems to be looking for her mother's killer. Savannah can relate to the girl and is very good in her dealing with her.
All appears good as she tracks down information and messes with the detective brother of the woman whose case she is working on. He's in from Texas and also trying to figure out her murder and at first doesn't like Savannah being involved. He soon changes his tune. The two even become attracted to one another.
This is SO good. I must admit that I had part of the story solved mid way through but not all of it. Kelley does a great job bringing all of the past together with out rehashing all the earlier books.
I now have to get caught up on a few quick reads so that I can get on to SPELLBOUND - Can't wait )!
